After 79 years of serving customers at their familiar storefront on 7th Avenue in New York City, the owner of the legendary Carnegie Deli announced that she would be closing on December 31, 2016. The restaurant first opened its doors in 1937 right across the street from its namesake Carnegie Hall primarily serving traditional New York Jewish deli fare with a side of attitude and has appeared in a number of films, including the Woody Allen film Broadway Danny Rose. In an interview with The New York Post, owner Marian Harper Levine about what led to the closure.
At this stage of my life, the early mornings to late nights have taken a toll, along with my sleepless nights and grueling hours that come with operating a restaurant business. I’m very sad to close the Carnegie Deli but I’ve reached the time of my life when I need to take a step back
